Overview

thePREP is a Norwegian future planning company on a mission to make life planning and critical legal preparation accessible, affordable, and simple. Their digital platform guides users through the creation of essential documents, including Future Power of Attorney, Wills, and Gift Deeds, using a blend of AI-driven assistance and human lawyer oversight.

For most people, legal processes feel intimidating, expensive, and easy to postpone. thePREP was founded to dismantle this barrier. By translating complex legal choices into plain language and providing a secure digital space to formalize one’s wishes, organize important information, and prepare for major life events, they empower Norwegian adults to protect their families and assets before life-changing events occur.

Driven by a vision to scale their impact, thePREP embarked on building a platform that could do more than just generate documents. They envisioned a dynamic, intelligent system capable of holding a user’s hand through life’s hardest decisions, from planning for incapacity to managing inheritance. But the vision extended beyond legal workflows alone: thePREP is building a living, data-driven platform where legal needs, assets, relationships, documentation, and personal wishes come together in one place to create smarter guidance and better preparedness over time.

The Challenge

The core challenge was bridging the gap between human intent and legal validity. While the concept was clear, the technical execution required building a platform that could interpret user intent expressed in plain language and translate it into precise, legally binding clauses.

It needed to orchestrate complex workflows that adapt to different document types and user circumstances while handling highly sensitive personal and legal data with ironclad security and comply with Norwegian identity verification standards through BankID.

At the same time, the challenge was not only to generate valid legal documents, but to create a broader platform where structured data about a user’s assets, family situation, prior transfers, goals, and life scenarios could power smarter workflows, more relevant recommendations, and a better end-to-end experience.

The platform also had to integrate with external registries to automatically fetch property and share ownership data, eliminating tedious manual entry. This was critical not just for efficiency, but because data is a core part of the product itself, enabling thePREP to give users better visibility, better guidance, and a stronger foundation for future decisions. And it needed to scale efficiently to support a growing library of document types and AI capabilities. Progressing from concept to a functional, trustworthy platform required more than standard web development. It demanded a sophisticated architecture where software could act intelligently on the user’s behalf, all while maintaining the rigorous accuracy required for legal enforceability.

The Solution

To bring this ambitious vision to life, thePREP collaborated with 99x to design and build a platform powered by agentic AI. The solution focused on creating an intelligent digital guide rather than a simple document editor.

The platform’s core intelligence is driven by specialized AI agents, orchestrated by the xians.ai platform. Unlike a standard chatbot, these .NET 9 agents work autonomously in the background. When a user expresses a wish, one agent interprets the intent, another cross-references it against legal rules, and a third begins populating the complex data structures required for the document. At the same time, the system structures and connects information across documents, assets, scenarios, and user choices, enabling a more intelligent and context-aware experience. This agent-based design allows the system to handle complex logic while keeping the user experience fluid and conversational.

To ensure a responsive and intuitive interface, 99x implemented a Backend for Frontend pattern using ASP.NET Core 9. This acts as a conductor, managing the real-time dialogue between the React frontend and the backend AI agents via WebSockets. Critically, the platform integrates with Norwegian registries like ENIN to automatically fetch a user’s property and share ownership, meaning the user does not have to manually inventory their assets. This turns external data into an active part of the user journey, not only pre-filling flows, but strengthening calculations, legal accuracy, and future decision support.

Trust is paramount. The platform enforces secure identity verification through BankID integration via Criipto. All data is secured within Microsoft Azure, utilizing Key Vault for secrets and Blob Storage for documents. The final step in the process blends AI efficiency with human expertise. The system generates a pristine PDF document using Handlebars and PuppeteerSharp, which is then reviewed and validated by a qualified lawyer, guaranteeing its legal validity.

In addition, the entire document lifecycle is fully managed within the system. This includes seamless communication between legal advisors and users, as well as integrated appointment scheduling ensuring a smooth and end-to-end guided experience throughout the process. This gives thePREP a platform that supports not only document creation, but also collaboration, advisor interaction, and ongoing follow-up over time.

The Technology

The full technology stack powering the platform includes ASP.NET Core 9 for the Backend for Frontend layer, .NET 9 for the AI agents, and React 18 with TypeScript for the frontend. The platform uses MongoDB as its primary database alongside Azure Cosmos DB for external asset integration. It is hosted on Microsoft Azure, leveraging Blob Storage, Key Vault, and Container Apps. Key integrations include Criipto for BankID, xians.ai  for AI orchestration, ENIN for Norwegian registry data, Handlebars and PuppeteerSharp for document generation, and additional tools for payments, SMS, and analytics.

A defining strength of the architecture is that it supports a modular, data-driven product model rather than isolated document flows. This makes it possible to reuse structured data across journeys such as Future Power of Attorney, wills, inheritance planning, gift deeds, calculators, and advisor workflows.

Impact & Results

With the agentic platform successfully enabled, thePREP has transformed a complex technical challenge into a scalable and trusted service. The implementation established a reliable software foundation capable of guiding users through the creation of legally sound documents with unprecedented ease.

The guided, AI-powered flow has made legal preparation accessible and affordable for Norwegian adults who previously found the process intimidating. At the same time, the platform lays the foundation for a broader customer experience: helping users stay in control through better structure, better data, and better visibility into their legal and financial situation.

The successful launch of the Future Power of Attorney agent proved the architecture. Development is already underway for Will and Testament agents, with Gift Deed and Advance Inheritance on the roadmap, demonstrating the platform’s ability to scale. By combining legal logic, structured data, scenario-based guidance, and asset visibility, thePREP is evolving from document creation into a broader preparedness platform — one that helps people stay in control before, during, and after major life events.

The Partnership

Since the start of the engagement, thePREP has collaborated with 99x as a strategic technology partner, combining deep expertise in software engineering with specialized capabilities in AI, cloud architecture, and modern web development. A dedicated team of five engineers works closely with thePREP, enabling rapid iteration from concept to a live, scalable platform. The partnership has helped transform an ambitious concept into a working platform with the technical flexibility to grow across products, user journeys, and future services.

99x has been a strong technology partner in bringing thePREP to life, helping us turn a complex and ambitious product vision into a scalable platform. We are in a good place now, and this is just the beginning. We have high ambitions for the future experience, built on our data-driven and AI-first approach.
